This street market is one of Milan’s top festivals, held on the feast of the city’s patron saint, Ambrogio. The streets around piazza Castello throng with crowds sampling traditional food such as pancakes, roast meat, chestnuts and mulled wine; and there are stalls selling crafts and antiques. Goldsmiths made a gift to the city of a silver statue of the saint, exhibited on this day in the Duomo cathedral.
The tradition wants that people buy here their Christmas decorations, while eating chestnuts sold in stalls and defending from the bitter cold with a glass of sweet hot wine – called vin brulè.
