As you probably know Milan is changing a lot in these times, we are waiting for the Expo 2015 Milan and many things are going to change soon.
Today we want to talk about Milan’s public transport system (ATM, it is not a cash machine but an acronym of Azienda Trasporti Milanesi) and give you some info and tips to use them after a Free Walking Tour in Milan (If you are tired!)
Milan has a very good public transport system, It has four metro lines (92 km total) that we use to call with name of a colour:
Linea 1: Red Line (Linea Rossa or La Rossa) Sesto 1° Maggio- Rho Fiera / Bisceglie
Linea 3: Yellow Line (Linea Gialla or La Gialla) San Donato – Comasina
Linea 5: Lilac Line (Linea Lilla or La Lilla) Bignami – Garibaldi FS
If you read properly the lines above you can see that miss Linea 4: Yes, It is correct. Linea 4 (Linea Blu or La Blu) will open around 2016 and will connect the city-airport Linate with the city center.
If you already been here you noticed for sure Trams in Milan are more than a normal public transport. Despite the fact they are quite slow, It is the best way to discover the city center after a Free Walking Tour in Milan. We recommend Tram N°1 line; It goes to the main spots of Milan (Castle, Fashion areas, Cathedral Square, La Scala).
Buses suffer a bit the traffic jams, so to reach a place we suggest you always to go closer with a metro line and than walk or catch a bus for a shorter section. Anyway they will save your life during the night, when your wallet will be empty and a taxi too expensive. But we will talk about below concerning night public transport in Milan.
But most of you are party-animals! So…How to come back safely and in a cheap way to your hostel ?
Since 2011 municipality of Milan provides every Friday and Saturday nights a no-stop night service of buses that follow (every 30 minutes) routes of metro lines .
Everyday of the week circle lines 90-91 run all night long and will help you to come up to your place!
We suggest to you to check the fastest way to reach a place by public transport here where you can write your address and destination.
Milan public transport system works good. Use it!
